Internships, Potential, and "Keeping your foot on the gas"

Finding an Internship that satisfies the requirements of the University of Wisconsin-Stout Business Administration program is not a tough task, but as a "classic overachiever" it is not so easy. It has been such a long and grueling search that today I received feedback from a company today that I don't ever recall contacting. For a quick second I thought maybe at this point I was being recruited (wouldn't that be nice) but not the case. Long story short I had been recommended to them by someone within my network, but turns out it was a legitimate "internship" which is a fun way of saying "unpaid." the other catch to this internship was that it was a six-month internship. I'm not sure who in their right mind can afford to work a 6-month unpaid internship coming off of a long line of school bills from a full 4+years.

Several months ago I would have jumped at any offers I received out of pure oblivion of the fact that this is such a pivotal step in my life-long career. It is important to get an internship where I can take the necessary steps to being ready for the real-world. This is why I have made the decision to go off on my own, I want to learn every single one of the necessary skills that I would need in the job world, rather than be too focused on a single area.

In May I will set sail on my own journey in to the world of Entrepreneurial Marketing in the area of SEO and SMO. Schrupp Creative Services, LLC was one of my topics of discussion in my last post, so I will try to not be to backtrack or be repetitive for the sanity of my audience (which apparently is actually a few people if the profile view counter is correct).

I have numerous theories in the worlds of SMO and SEO and I have seen first-hand the effects that it can have on a business, which gives me hope for the future. I will be on my own this summer for the most part, but I have to give a shout out to my best-friend and business partner Matt Graves, Jr. Matt is a full-time graphic artist for Southern Graphics out of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and let me be the first to tell you that he is the BEST IN THE BUSINESS. I am such a graphic art snob due to the never ending top-class work that Matt comes up with on a daily basis. Graphic Art was something I knew nothing about just a couple short years ago, so I owe Matt for teaching me everything I know. Matt will be assisting me in my entrepreneurial endeavors this summer as a part-time designer for SCS, he will give me the edge over the competition that I will need, because there isn't a designer in the world that can top his creativity, originality, and perfectionist touch.

On to another topic, I have been thinking a lot lately about what it really takes to get a job. We are going to go past connections and things of that nature. We are talking interview topics and the difference between a good and great interview that ultimately land jobs in ultra-competitive fields. I am not the type of student that has a ton of accolades or accomplishments that show up on a resume and jump off of the page. I am the type of guy who gets an interview because I am just accomplished enough to do so, and then I win the job in the interview room. The type of interview I am referring to though is not something that can be taught in a workshop or classroom or anything like that, I don't brown-nose the interviewer and tell him what I think he wants to hear so that he thinks I am qualified.

I really have no dialog for interviews, I like to think that I am a personable enough person that I can go with the flow and try to adapt to the interviewers style and go from there. I go in to every interview with really one goal in mind, and that is to convey potential. Am I the most polished person they are interviewing? Probably not, but I make sure that they know my potential, I express to them my passion for the job and them pretty much lay it out on the table, "I am going to strive every single day to become the absolute best Marketing Professional in the Marketing Industry and they would never regret hiring me. Why? The potential that I possess, I have a mind that is willing to be molded, but am also good at learning on my own and learning at a fast pace. If a business isn't moving forward and making pushes to be bigger and more successful, then they will ultimately die.

This brings me to my next topic of discussion for the day, and that is what I just spoke about, a stagnant business is a dead business. In today's business climate, if you are just simply getting by, you might as well lock up the doors and try to salvage whatever value you can out of your business, it is much too competitive to operate a straight-line business plan. To connect my last two topics, this is the way my mind thinks, I want to be moving forward at all times and I am always willing to put in the work if I can see growth out of it.

My point of the day though is: Don't be the type of person that thinks if they get their degree and  build their resume, everything else will be taken care of. As important as a degree is, it isn't everything, you have to stand out in the business world and most importantly always move forward!

Thanks everyone if you made it this far, I appreciate you reading, check back or subscribe so that you can recieve updates when I have new posts.

Sincerely,

Ty Schrupp

Lets get this started on the right foot...

First off, I want to thank the person who inspired me to blog, Tim Anderson, check out Tim's blog and follow him on Twitter @timtim820 guy is a sports GENIUS! Oh, also follow me if you haven't already @tyschrupp05 I promise I won't dissappoint... Well, let me recant that statement, that is a bit too much to promise at this point in time, I promise I won't try to dissapoint anyone, better? Okay!
Lets see, lets see, lets see, where to start....

Oh! Sure we could talk some #Twolves,

What is with this team? They are so fun to watch, and every night out I find myself saying "The Wolves are the better team, put them away!" But yet... they only do so 50% of the time, they need someone who can knock down shots throughout a game, too may streaky shooters on the team, consistency is key. Anyway, I better address my main man RUUUUUUBBBBBIIIIIOOOOOOO! Love watching that kid (yes I'm a few months older than him so I can call him that)  he's so much more than anyone could have realistically hoped for when we first drafted him, and he has been great for basketball in this city. Now some #MNWild...

This season has been FULL of up and downs, injuries have turned us in to a minor league squad (much like the 2011 Twins) which has made it tough to watch, the future is bright for this squad though.

The future (24 months from today) of the #MNWild is basically comprised of really god top 6 forwards, really good top 6 defenseman. The only problem with this, according to my Coon Rapids Educational System mathematics, is that a Stanley Cup caliber team has more depth at the forward position, so that will be what Chuck Fletcher will have to spend his time pondering over in the next year or so. Another concern of mine is that I'm not sure we have a Stanley Cup caliber goaltender in the organization anymore, but that will have to be put on the back burner for another day.

This summer (hold the applause) I will be starting my own marketing business, Schrupp Creative Services, LLC. I have low cost starter plans for the business and I have given it a lot of thought over the years, this will be my shot, at least it won't be in the dark. SCS will begin specializing in Social Media Optimization (SMO) this is my niche in a market that is really lacking knowledgeable SMO experts, the low-cost options available to emerging businesses are outstanding and undeniable to someone who has seen the benefits of said options.

I want to briefly touch on the newest Social Media Powerhouse, and that is Pinterest.com, though I do social network, Pinterest is not my cup of tea, it is mainly targeted at females and if you haven't seen it, don't bother, you will just end up kicking yourself wondering why in the HE## you didn't think of it yourself. It is so simple! Pinterest consists of a simple bulletin board idea where people (women) can post pictures, recipes, party ideas, and other crazy things they think others might like to see, then they can save them on their page and share with their friends. As any Social Media does, this website provides an ENORMOUS PLATFORM for businesses to contact their target markets and generate interest in their products. If you read about Pinterest you will learn it has a  very laid back atmosphere (yes, I did just refer to the online browsing experience as an "atmosphere," hey people we created this bed, now lets lay in it), so it isn't geared for the same kind of formal advertising that a business might put in place with websites like Facebook or Twitter. Pinterest simply asks people nicely on their "about us" tab to not conduct too much self-promotion. If a business were to really utilize Pinterest, they would simply have to put someone familiar with the site (preferably a female) to do their promotion, because of the laid back manner that I spoke of before. Ok, enough about Pinterest for now.

I want to hear what everyone thinks about the seriously scary emergence of the Search Engine Optimization Industry (if I would have called this an "Industry" 5 years ago, people would have laughed hysterically) I have had conversations with professionals who have expressed to me the importance of SEO, and told me that they have full-time SEO experts, and these are small businesses! Crazy. This emergence wouldn't be so crazy though if we just had more people in the Business world that knew what they were doing when it comes to Social Media. No, I don't mean the various Gen X's that have a Facebook to keep in touch with family and to monitor their children. I am talking not only people who understand the upside of Social Media on a business, but actually know how to utilize them and are able to grow their business through them. In the near future there are going to be a whole new wave of Social Media crazies entering the Business World, I am just hoping it doesn't become over exploited and saturate the market for such a thing. I don't anticipate that happening any time soon, but hey you never know.

One last thing I want to touch on today is the value of an education through the eyes of a living breathing college student. There are so many students out there who are in school for the wrong reasons, college has become a necessary thing for high school graduates and they are simply enrolling in post-secondary simply because it is "expected." These young adults I'm referring to have no idea what they want to do and I'm not saying they shouldn't be going to school, I'm just saying that a lot of them need to seriously re-think their priorities. It isn't all bad though, I have all of these kids to thank for pulling the curve down in all of my classes allowing me to get A's in all of my classes, so here it is, thank you non-ambitious young adults for the GPA assistance you have given me.

I am starting to realize though that their is so much more to college than grades and getting your degree. I am loving every single one of my Business classes, thank you UW-Stout Business Professors for that, and that was not always the case. I was much like all of the other scared, unaware young adults I spoke of earlier until I started to look at school in a different light. I was looking at school as something I had to do, like a tricky gate you have to get past to get in to the Business World, and it is so much more than that! School is something that you have to look at in a fun, exploratory light. These industry professionals are coming back to the well to teach us exactly what they wish they would have known when they started their careers, they are giving us a head start, and I love going to class every single day to learn every drop of information that I can from them, because they have proven that they know their craft as good as anyone!

College is so much more than drinking, trouble, all-nighters, sports and the opposite sex. College is about being excited about something you actually chose to do! How many of our parents can say that? College gives us the chance to choose our life, and if we work hard and give it every ounce of effort we possibly can and to accept nothing short of our dreams.

Well, enough from me for now, let me know what you think and I will be back soon!

Love you all,

Ty Schrupp
